So, I am a transition teacher, but I wear another hat as special
education department head for my high school campus. I am accountable for 11
other teachers and 11 paraprofessionals. So far this year, staffing has been the
greatest hurdle on our campus. I have a principal who is gracious enough to
allow and even encourage me to be a part of the interviewing and hiring
processes. I have learned SO MUCH about applications, resumes, references,
interviews and other pieces of the hiring process!
Over the summer we miraculously had no teachers resign, so
no hiring to be done there. However, we had 3 paraprofessional positions open
for various reasons (hired as a teacher, relocated, etc). One position was
filled easily. Second position was filled just a week before school started.
The other was interviewed for, offered, and accepted but then the candidate
took a teaching position the day before school started. Good for her, sad for
So another round of interviews, another offer and
acceptance, then the candidate had a change of mind — #2 down. Sigh. Back to
the drawing board.
Somewhere around this point one of our teachers resigned. So
also looking to fill that position.
Happily for one of the other newly-hired paraprofessionals, it was in a
subject area that he was already certified for. Easy hire but
leaves another vacancy for a paraprofessional.
Round #3 of interviews – hire a replacement for the new
vacancy and offered other position to another candidate who accepted and was eager
to start but was somehow confused and thought they were being hired for a
teaching position, so when they got to human resources the next day, they took
back their acceptance. Down goes #3.
Round #4, another good candidate, offered the position, and accepted.
Waits for 2 weeks notice to expire at previous job and when arrives to sign
paperwork at human resources, accepts another position within the district that
they had been offered. Boo, #4.
Round #5. More interviews and plans to offer position to a
candidate. Keep your fingers crossed for us!
Meanwhile another staff member is reassigned to another
campus. A teacher vacancy. Again, sigh. I need a break!
Any great advice for attracting and closing the deal with
quality candidates? Especially for a job that doesn’t pay great?
