Behavior Management Resources

February 26, 2009 By CEC

Hi everyone! Thanks for joining Reality 101 for New Teachers. Behavior is my niche, so this week I thought I’d share some of my favorite behavior management resources. Just about everyone in special education keeps lists of resources nearby, as we are always looking for more items to add to our bag of tricks. Also, in our profession, just when you think you’ve seen it all, watch out — something new, interesting, or challenging is right around the corner!

Enjoy these resources and please join in, comment, and share your favorites. We really appreciate your input. This is your blog!

http://www.cec.sped.org – Home of your professional organization!

www.oswego.edu/~mcdougal/web_site_4_11_2005/index.html — Great graphing tools for monitoring academics and behavior.

http://712educators.about.com/ — Search engine with links to resources for educators.

Ice Breakers – An interesting and useful article full of ideas on how to break the ice on that first day of school.

Ways To Catch Kids Being Good — This Web site provides a unique way to manage behavior. The idea is to catch students while they are at their best behavior in the classroom.

Simple Ways to Help Children with Special Needs — This very handy Web site provides useful tips in a simple format. These tips are arranged under a variety of headings, including modification, inattention, impulsivity, hyperactivity, academic success, and organizational skills.

www.challengingbehavior.org— The Technical Assistance Center on Social Emotional Intervention for Young Children, also known as TACSEI, is a five-year grant made possible by the U.S. Department of Education, Office of Special Education Programs. TACSEI takes the research that shows which practices improve the social-emotional outcomes for young children with or at risk for delays or disabilities and creates FREE products and resources to help decision makers, caregivers, and service providers apply those best practices. Most of these free products are available on the Web site for you to view, download, and use.

Dr. Mac's Behavior Management Site — There are tons of links to sites on behavior/classroom management, including how to access behavior problems and how to manage these problems.

Teacher Focus — Techniques for handling behavior problems and motivating students.

Intervention Central — Offers free tools and resources to help school staff and parents promote positive classroom behaviors and foster effective learning for all children and youth.

Really Best List of Classroom Management Resources — Offers classroom management techniques tailored to elementary and secondary education, discipline ideas for new and experienced teachers, suggestions for getting organized, strategies for preventing behavior problems, sample classroom rules, ways of creating a caring community, and information on new products and services. There are even a few resources for those who question the basic premise of classroom management.

TeachNet.com: How to Manage — A rich collection of classroom management resources.

Technical Assistance Center on Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports(PBIS) — PBIS was established by the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Special Education Programs to give schools capacity-building information and technical assistance for identifying, adapting, and sustaining effective school-wide disciplinary practices.

You Can Handle Them All — The purpose of this tool is to provide you with a resource for handling student misbehavior. It presents a complete step-by-step approach to changing inappropriate student behavior to appropriate behavior.

Check out the blog later this week for additional resources and books, books, and more books. Lots of resources for your spring/summer reading list!

Best,
Maureen Gale
